Best by category
24 practical shortlists. Specialists judged on their own work.
These are editorial recommendations within each domain. Individual models, workflow and support matter more than a small difference in brand score.
Modular-storage names are examples, not separately scored product tests. Full ratings and retailer sources are available in the directory.
Build a kit you will actually use
Best all-round garage & workshop brands
One powered core. A mechanical foundation. Specialist upgrades where they earn their place.
Where to start
Buy the missing capability, not the biggest kit
For a European-car garage, select metric sockets, Torx, external Torx and the required spline/triple-square profiles by the actual vehicle and procedure. A large generic kit can still omit the one profile you need. Buy a torque wrench for the working range you use, not the highest advertised maximum.
The best overall setup is a deliberate mix. Scores retain each brand’s stated domain.
Pressure-washer compatibility
Kärcher: three ranges, different fittings
Keep the accessory/nozzle end separate from the high-pressure hose connections.
Confirm the exact threaded or quick-connect interface.
A hose “Quick Connect” does not necessarily mean 1/4-inch.
The standard 1/4-inch statement applies here on the discussed petrol models.
What the sources establish
G3200: Mitre 10 explicitly lists a 1/4-inch quick-change nozzle fitting.
G3500 Plus: the manufacturer owner manual for the previously discussed 9.507-267.0 version specifies a 1/4-inch quick connector for the surface-cleaner adaptor and foam jet (p.13). Kärcher’s current nozzle kit also lists both G3200 and G3500 Plus.
Classification: the current Australian G3500 Plus page remains under Home & Garden. A commercial-style gun does not make the whole machine a Professional HD/HDS product.
Buy by the connection and operating limits
Check the nozzle/accessory coupler, hose-to-gun and pump-to-hose connections separately. Threaded/M22 hose arrangements are a different interface from the 1/4-inch accessory end. Match pressure rating, flow and nozzle orifice to the washer; a fitting that clicks in is only one part of compatibility.
Revision / pump note: Bunnings currently describes its G3500 Plus as triplex. The current Kärcher page uses product number 1.194-061.0, while the linked older manual is 9.507-267.0. Confirm the exact SKU and pump specification on the machine being supplied before transferring older specifications between versions.
For concrete and a surface cleaner, compare rated working pressure, litres per minute, pump serviceability and duty suitability. Do not rank machines by peak PSI alone. Brand scores do not guarantee a specific sub-$1,000 machine will perform like an industrial cleaner.

Method & sources
A practical shortlist, not a laboratory league table. Checked 17 September 2026.
Compare within the stated domain
A 9.5 for Knipex concerns pliers and cutters. A 9 for Makita concerns a power-tool platform. Neither score says one company is universally better than the other.
The editorial assessment prioritises useful design, capability and build; then range, Australian access and support; then value relative to the alternatives. It is not a calculated test score, customer-review average, measured failure rate or lifetime guarantee. Half-point steps avoid pretending to know a meaningful difference between, for example, 9.2 and 9.3.
What the retailer column means
Listed channels are verified examples of Australian catalogue access, not a promise of shelf stock at every Melbourne branch. Online delivery, special order and dealer supply count; check your postcode, exact SKU and lead time. TKD means Tool Kit Depot. Sydney Tools is a national chain, including Victoria.
Retailer listings establish availability and range; they do not independently validate the scores. Sources substantiate catalogue presence, product scope and specific technical distinctions. Scores, weaknesses and buying priorities are editorial synthesis.
Market tiers & scope
Budget: lowest-cost essentials. DIY: intermittent household work. Prosumer: demanding home or light-workshop use. Trade: regular paid work. Professional: specialist capability and frequent use. Industrial: sustained or production-oriented applications. Many brands span tiers; model choice remains decisive.
Scope is tools, workshop and trade equipment, plus associated accessories and systems. This covers major and notable brands, not every retailer label or every building-material, paint, appliance or household-goods brand. No current-price comparison is implied.
Retailer coverage includes Bunnings, Tool Kit Depot, Total Tools, Sydney Tools, Mitre 10, Supercheap Auto, Repco, Burson and selected Australian specialist/dealer channels. Listings may be cached, order-in or location-dependent.
